A Message from north country region officials division...
Junior National and National Officials are now required to fulfill 30 hours of participating in Region events per year to keep their certification. This can be done by being a clinician, working at tournaments, etc.
if a junior national/national official is hired to work at a tournament not run by the ncr staff they must bring with, fill out, and submit the hour sheet which can be found on our website. This is mandatory in order to have your hours recorded!

This is another reminder that your National Officials’ Commission dues of $40 will be due and payable by November 1, 2009. If the dues are not POSTMARKED by November 15, 2009, you will be subject to a late fee of $40 (total due: $80). If the dues and late fee are not POSTMARKED by December 31, 2009, you will be subject to loss of your national level certifications.

You are required to pay these dues as a National-level USAV Official (all National Scorekeepers and Referees and all Junior National Referees) and they are in addition to what you pay to your region for insurance and membership purposes. The $40 National Officials’ Commission dues helps to fund the re-evaluations that each of us receives at a National tournament during our certification term along with the development of the National clinic that each of us need to attend each year.

You MUST complete and return with your dues the 2009-10 Officials Information/Renewal form. Return both the form and your payment of $40 (check payable to USA Volleyball) to the address listed on the form in order to receive credit for payment of dues. You can access either a PDF or Microsoft Word version of the Officials Information/Renewal form. You can choose whichever is easiest for you to access.

A Message from usa volleyball officials division...

A new USAV season is here and there is a lot going on in all the regions. The Officials Commission has been hard at work getting things together for this new season, and we want to make sure you have everything you need to get started and have a successful season!!!

We are also pleased to announce that the New England Region will be putting this basic clinic online with voice-overs. If they would like, Individual regions will be able to send new or existing referees to view the clinic online for no charge. Regions that want to obtain information about who watches the clinic can do so by working with NERVA. For more information or to arrange for participation, contact Steve Webster at steve@srwebster.com.

In addition, the Volleyball Referee Training site will undergo some major changes after January 1. You can access the site at: http://www.volleyballreftraining.com/index.php.

We're delighted to announce that we are updating and re-designing the web site to make it available at no cost to all referees across the country. The site will provide videos, multimedia PowerPoint presentations, and other tools to assist referees as they grow in their officiating career. Right now, there are two videos on the site with a third one well into production. We are very hopeful that the re-designed site will be available to all referees starting on January 1, 2010. We're also delighted to report that the USAV Referee Training Blog (http://volleyballreftraining.com/usavreftrainingblog/?page_id=2) will be re-invigorated, so look for some good stuff there. If you have any questions, drop a line to Steve.

There are 26 USAV National Clinics remaining through the season. There is a $20 fee, payable in advance, for all clinic participants ($30 at the door). To register, please contact George Egan (george.egan@usav.org) or go http://usavolleyball.org/pages/6521 .

We will not be holding USAV training camps at any Qualifiers this year. Two camps have already been planned. One will be held in Columbus, Ohio on February 6-7, 2010 and the other will be held in Chicago on February 13-15, 2010. The cost to the individual camper is $200. We will still hold the Premier Camp at the Boys' or Girls' National Tournament in the summer of 2010.

Rating information for Junior National and National candidates will be finalized once the playing schedule/format has been established by USA Volleyball. The candidate information and application forms will be published on the USAV website after the first of the year, and each region will receive notification once that information is available. Junior National candidates will be rated during the Girls’ JOVC in Reno, NV (June 24-July 3, 2010). National candidates will be rated during the Boys’ JOVC in Austin, TX (June 30-July 7, 2010). Specific dates for each rating session will be announced in the coming weeks. We do not expect any changes/increases in application fees this season. Questions about the rating process may be sent to Brian Hemelgarn, Director – National and Junior National Referee Certifications & Evaluations (bhemelgarn@sbcglobal.net).

The online USAV Exam A became available on October 15 and this information has been sent to all chairpersons who make use of this tool, and also to all National and Junior National Referees. Remember that only the national level referees have a time limit on the exam – they must complete the exam in 60 minutes or less whether taking the exam on line or by paper. We strongly encourage all National and Junior National Referees to take the exam online, but this is not required.

The USA Volleyball Board of Directors met for a day-long session on Oct. 30 in Holyoke, Mass., the birthplace of world volleyball, as it moved into the second year of its reformed governance structure.

The meeting produced decisions on creating enhanced services for its regions, clubs and members as well as a platform to better leverage growth opportunities for sand/beach volleyball nationwide. Following the board meeting, the USA Volleyball Foundation met to discuss opportunities to raise money to serve previously underserved areas of volleyball audiences nationwide.

“The USAV Board successfully concluded its first year under the new streamlined governance structure implemented in October 2008,” USA Volleyball Board of Directors Chairman David Schreff said. “We are very privileged to welcome new board members Bill Barnum, general partner of Brentwood Associates Private Equity, and also Kathy DeBoer, Executive Director of the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Both Bill and Kathy bring added sophisticated financial and organizational insights to our board that will assist us in continuing our momentum.”

During its meeting which preceded the annual Volleyball Hall of Fame induction ceremonies also held in Holyoke, the Board discussed ways to grow the sport at all levels – youth, juniors and adults, for both indoor and beach disciplines. After a year of careful consideration, the board voted to increase the national office administrative fee – the first fee change earmarked for expanded national and regional office programs in the last nine years – enabling it to better support new growth initiatives for the quad cycle.

“The Board maintains its commitment to broaden services to our expanding youth and adult membership base, now nearing 250,000; to implement new media and social networking methods to connect national office initiatives with the Regional Volleyball Associations (RVAs), clubs and schools; and to better serve both junior and adult members,” Schreff said. “Our RVAs and clubs have done an excellent job of growing membership nearly 10,000 this year and USAV needs to provide even more support for this expanding base. The Board voted to implement a $10 administrative fee increase to begin in the 2010-11 season, and that will help us drive many initiatives to better promote the sport, add volleyball social networking and provide customizable promotional product to regions and clubs."

With 2008 U.S. Olympic beach gold medalists Kerri Walsh and Todd Rogers in attendance, the USAV Board voiced its continued support for upcoming NCAA legislation to add sand volleyball to the women's collegiate varsity ranks and addressed opportunities to improve athlete support in international competitions. Among the organization’s plans is to establish enhanced policy and communications support through a subcommittee of beach-specific experts to guide the board and staff as beach opportunities expand.

“The Board re-affirmed its commitment to expand opportunities for the beach/sand discipline, including support for the current NCAA initiative to recognize collegiate women's sand volleyball as an emerging sport,” Schreff said. “Further, we agreed to provide enhanced planning and athlete services to better support our international beach athletes as they represent the USA in FIVB competition. Also, we are working closely with the new ownership and management team at the AVP to identify cross-promotional opportunities for business partners reaching beach volleyball fans. The sand/beach discipline is expanding worldwide and we must maintain USA competitive pre-eminence. Over coming years we will invest even further in junior and adult events and enhanced international beach athlete support services.”

In accessing the progress USA Volleyball made during the latest board meeting, Schreff indicated the organization will work toward creating new avenues to tie the player community at all levels with media and marketing opportunities for additional branding opportunities.

“Overall, we will continue to identify new and imaginative ways to link our participating player community with the media and marketing partners who can help grow our sport,” Schreff said. “We have a long way to go to connect all 13 million volleyball players in the USA, but it can be done with better uses of social networking media technology, member drives and coordination among USAV's many constituent organizations.”

USA Volleyball Foundation

The USA Volleyball Foundation Board of Directors met on Oct. 30 following the USA Volleyball Board of Directors meeting. The board received an update of the current finances and a report from the new USA Volleyball Foundation Director of Development Tim McCune, who reviewed his activities for the first four months as the director in this newly created position.

The USA Volleyball Foundation’s mission is devoted to supporting and enhancing the purpose, programs and beneficiaries of USA Volleyball. As all National Governing Body’s of sport in the United States, USA Volleyball does not receive governmental support. And the private donations to the Foundation go to support all levels and areas of volleyball, including beach and indoor programs, Paralympics, junior, adult and of course the Olympic teams.

Since taking his role with the USA Volleyball Foundation, McCune has designed a new donor centric web page, hosting activities at the USA Volleyball Junior Girls National Championships, the Women’s Pan American Games in Miami and a celebration/recognition event in conjunction with the City of Anaheim (Calif.), home of the men’s and women’s indoor Olympic Teams.

For more information about the USA Volleyball Foundation, visit www.usavolleyball.org/pages/1692. All donations - large and small - are currently being accepted by check or credit card and can be sent to:
